After a career as an auto mechanic, Harry Kooy now spends his time making wire sculptures and copper machines. He works in a small shop in his home in Kitchener. He is inspired by the natural world, fantasy, and the machines of the 19th century. He uses simple tools to work with wire, copper, stone and wood. Harry’s machines evolve as prototypes that are adjusted until they reach a magical moment where beauty combines with movement. He found a way to modify copper plumbing so that it can be displayed as kinetic art. Harry’s wire sculptures are the result of playfully twisting wire to see what can happen. Each unique piece is the result of hours of careful experimentation and modification. Harry has enjoyed the opportunity to teach classes on how to make wire trees at the Home Watson House and Gallery in Kitchener and at the Button Factory Arts Centre in Waterloo. His work has appeared in many juried gallery exhibitions and art fairs.
